The adult unit of the Tianjin Social Welfare Institute provides services for handicapped persons over 14 years of age, who have limited labor skills and no source of income. Primary services are for those with no parents, but the unit also houses those from families who have difficulty providing care in the home.
The Institute is a 280-bed facility on 24,000 square meters; the building contains 6000 square-meters of space and includes an exercise room, a resting room and a recovery hall.
The workers at the institute train the residents for daily life skills with help from the government and various circles, who provide money and supplies.
ICCO is involved at the adult facility in a number of ways. In addition to providing regular volunteers who visit the facility and spend time with the residents, they fund positions for an occupational therapist and a translator. The occupational therapist not only helps the clients improve their functional abilities but also helps with training of the staff. ICCO also enriches the lives of the residents by funding salaries for caregivers and special education teachers. Other monies contributed by ICCO have paid for corrective surgeries and medical devices, such as hearing aids and prosthetic limbs.
