HOW YOU CAN HELP ... Volunteer

ICCO has significantly improved the quality of life experienced by Tianjin’s handicapped orphans, but there is still a lot more that needs to be done.

More volunteers are needed to go into the orphanage to hold, feed, talk to and play with the children.
Volunteers with specific skills such as the following are needed:
  • Special education
  • Developmental therapy
  • Nursing
  • Medical or office skills
While regular paid staff play the key role in caring for the orphans, the role of volunteers is to provide supplementary assistance in looking after the children.

Some possible ways to contribute are:

  • Playing with the children to provide them the stimulation and physical touch they are sometimes lacking, as well as to help them develop better motor skills.
  • Helping to feed the babies with food prepared by the orphanage staff. This could include bottle feeding babies as well as spoon feeding older children at lunch time. The staff does not usually ask you to do this, but they are often grateful when you offer to help.
  • Helping with physical therapy goals for the children. If you are interested in this, please contact the Medical Coordinator or the Physical Therapist.
